Residential removalists in Adelaide for family homes, children and pets included

Residential removalists in Adelaide move furniture. A family move is more than that: it is a school run that still has to happen, a dog that does not understand why the house is full of boxes, and a first night in a new home that needs to feel like home. This page is about moving a family, and about the parents and grandparents who are moving into something smaller.

House Removalists Adelaide is a service of Moveall Australia Pty Ltd, a South Australian owned and operated removalist. Family moves booked through this site are carried out by Moveall.

Home removalists in Adelaide, planned around the household

Most home removalists plan the truck. We plan the household first: who needs to be where on moving day, which rooms have to work on the first night, and which days in the week the move cannot touch. When you call, tell us about the people and the animals as well as the furniture. It changes the order the house is packed and loaded, and the order it is set up again.

  • Who is home on the day. One adult who can make decisions at each end, and someone looking after children and pets elsewhere.
  • Which rooms come first. Usually the children’s bedrooms and the kitchen, so bedtime and breakfast work on the first night.
  • What cannot move. School, sport, shift work and settlement times, so the move fits around them rather than through them.
  • What is heavy or awkward. A piano, a pool table, a trampoline or a cubby: mention them early so the right gear and crew come.

Moving house with children

Children cope with a move better when they can see it coming and when their own room is the first thing that feels normal at the other end. Tell them early, show them the new house or photos of it, and let them pack a box of their own things that they carry themselves.

  • Pack their room last. Leave the bed, a favourite toy and the bedtime routine in place until the final night.
  • Label their boxes in their colour. A room colour makes it easy for the crew, and it gives the children a job.
  • Arrange care for moving day. Moveall’s terms ask for a clear, safe path between the truck and the home, with children kept clear. A grandparent or a friend’s house is the easiest answer.
  • Set their room up first. Ask the crew to place their beds first, and make them up before the rest of the house is unloaded.

Moving house with dogs and cats

Pets do not like moving day. Doors are open, strangers are carrying things and the house they know is disappearing into boxes. The safest plan is for them to be somewhere else for the day, or shut in one quiet, emptied room with a sign on the door. They travel in your car, not on the truck.

  • Check the new yard first. Gaps under fences and gates are easier to fix before the dog arrives than after it has found them.
  • Keep cats inside for a while. A cat let out too soon may try to find its way back to the old house.
  • Pack a pet box. Food, bowls, a lead, bedding, litter and any medicine, carried in the car with the first-night box.
  • Update the details. Change the address on the microchip record and the pet’s council registration once you have moved.

Choosing the week, and the day

For a family the best moving day is often decided by everything else: settlement, the end of a lease, school holidays, a new job. Book as soon as one of those dates is fixed. If you have any choice, a move early in the week leaves the days after it for unpacking, connections and the school run, rather than leaving it all for a Monday morning. Our article on choosing a moving day goes through the trade-offs.

The rooms that take the longest

In a family home a handful of rooms decide the packing time. Plan for them first, or hand them to Moveall’s Wrap & Pack service, which packs all approved household items and supplies the boxes and packing materials.

Moveall’s terms ask that loose items are packed in cartons and that furniture is emptied of loose items, so the drawers, toy boxes and wardrobes all need clearing before the day. If you would like the whole house packed and moved by one team, read packers and movers in Adelaide.

The first week in the new home

Once the truck has gone, a family move still has a week of small jobs. Connect the power, water and internet before moving day so the house works on the first night. Service SA says you must update your address within 14 days of the change, and one update covers your driver’s licence and vehicle registrations. Tell the school, the doctor and the dentist, redirect the mail, and update your enrolment with the AEC once you have lived at the new address for a month. The moving house checklist puts all of it in order.

Parents moving to something smaller

Many residential moves are the other way round: parents leaving the family home for a unit, a townhouse or a retirement village, with their adult children helping from a distance. These moves are about choosing what goes as much as moving it, and they work best with a floor plan of the new home and a few weeks to decide. Our page on downsizing moves sets out how we plan them, including furniture that has to fit smaller rooms.

Residential removals across Adelaide

Moveall moves family homes in all 28 suburbs on its list, from Elizabeth and Golden Grove in the north to Blackwood and Marion in the south and from Henley Beach to Burnside. The regional pages describe the streets and homes in each area: the northern suburbs, the eastern suburbs, the southern suburbs and the western suburbs and beaches. For the complete move from the quote to the first night, read house removalists in Adelaide.

What shapes the quote for a family move

The quote is built on your inventory: the bedrooms and living areas, the access at both homes, and heavy or bulky items. Packing adds to it if you want Moveall to do it, and a long carry or stairs at either end adds time. A fixed-price quote relies on the inventory list from the quote, so items added on the day are charged by the hour. Moveall holds $20 million public liability cover; ask us about transit insurance for your belongings when you book.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between residential removalists and house removalists?

Very little: both move homes. Residential removals covers any home, from a unit to a five-bedroom house, and this page is about the families and the downsizers who live in them. The complete move itself is described on our house removalists page.

Should the children be at home on moving day?

It is easier if they are not. Moveall’s terms ask that children, pets and other trades are kept clear of the path between the truck and the home, so a grandparent, a friend or a school day is the simplest plan.

Can the pets travel on the truck?

No. Pets travel with you in the car. Keep them away from the open doors and the carrying on the day, either at a friend’s place or in one quiet, emptied room.

Can you set up the children’s beds first?

Tell the crew which rooms come first and the beds for those rooms can be placed first, so you can make them up while the rest of the house comes off the truck.

Can I pay for the move in instalments?

Moveall accepts Afterpay as well as the major credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. For local moves Moveall takes a deposit to confirm the booking and the balance a day or two after the move.
